Discussion:
Drea de Matteo joins ''Friends'' spinoff
(too old to reply)

Interesting news from Entertainment Weekly. I think she will end up killing
herself on the Sopranos. Either on purpose or by overdose

"After years of living with a wiseguy, Drea de Matteo is moving in with a
not-too-bright guy. The actress best known as Adriana on ''The Sopranos'' has
landed a costarring role in ''Joey,'' this fall's ''Friends'' spinoff starring
Matt LeBlanc. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she'll play Gina, Joey
Tribbiani's hairdresser sister, who's reunited with her actor brother when he
moves to Hollywood. She's also the single mother of a young man who's the rare
rocket scientist in the Tribbiani family -- literally, since he's a college
engineering nerd who lacks the skills with the opposite sex that come easily to
Mom and Uncle Joey.

What does De Matteo's NBC gig mean for the fate of her ''Sopranos'' character?
Apparently nothing. As a guilt-ridden FBI informant whose being pumped for dirt on
fiancé Christopher and the rest of his crime family, Adriana is a prime candidate
for a whacking. According to the Reporter, however, De Matteo will be back for the
sixth and final season of HBO's ''Sopranos,'' which goes into production later
this year, and which won't conflict with her ''Joey'' duties. Maybe her guise as a
Hollywood hairdresser is part of a witness relocation program."

It won't get the axe right away. It will be put on "hiatus", then when
everybody has forgotten about the show, they'll give it it's proper axing.
Nobody knows where the money went-- nothin.

We went through all this about two weeks ago when it was first
announced. Anyone who knows anything about the TV networks will tell you
that you can't sign a big star coming off a hit series without
guaranteeing them a full season. And if even a third of the people who
watched Friends tune in to see this one, it'll be a bigger hit than most
of what's on the nets now.

Friends is one of the biggest hits ever and is going out a winner. This
show is going to have to suck bigtime not to get bigger ratings than the
other new shows with less buzz going for them.

No, it most certainly would *NOT* hurt in any way and, if I had to bet, I
would wager that is the direction they are going to take in the show, seeing
as how it's a Joey Tribbiani spin off. What would Joey's sister wear,
Purple Label Ralph Lauren Pant Suits, Calvin Klein Blouses, Prada and Gucci
shoes, and Burberry's coats?

Nah. . . .it's all Express, all the time for you Drea. Hope it's tight.

I'm no Friends fan, as I can usually get to punchlines well before the cast,
but obviously I've watched it before. There is some cleverness and a few
funny moments, but very few of them ever came from Joey. He struck me as
the most unrealistic, poorly written, obnoxious character on the show. One
minute he was a normal, womanizing, friendly kind of guy; the next he was
doing or saying something so incredibly stupid that it's a wonder he could
function in society. Why are oddball characters always so lazily written?
Everyone knows a goofy bastard or two, but how many of them say and do shit
like Joey? It's ridiculous.

I give the show a season, maybe two on life support, but I can't see how a
show centering on Joey could be funny. Of course, I don't think ANY
non-animated sitcoms are funny, but then I have that sense of humor that
requires me to rub *two* braincells together to get the joke.

"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

That has to be one of the saddest, if not truest quips ever. No matter how
intelligent, refined, or sophisticated you may be, the vast majority of
Americans think Survivor and Friends are worth watching. I can't sit still
through either show - in fact most sitcoms cause involuntary whimpers of
pain - but I'm in the small minority and I've accepted that. Insipid,
predictable humor is "what's funny" to most people. Oh well, just one more
show to veto when my girlfriend has the remote.

Oh, thank you! These shows are SO bad! I can't imagine who in the hell
even would watch these things? The acting is forced, the writing is just
terrible - it's not believable in any way, shape or form.

I'll miss shows like Frazier.

How about that spin-off from Hill Street Blues that was about anz'

glad - cuz it wasn't too much longer after that he went on to become one of

I'll miss ya, Blue.

Remember several seasons back when Andy had severe urological issues, and he

During that period, I took to calling him "Andy Dripowicz"...

I remember the first few episodes, and it wasn't Sipowitz that was jammin'.
It was David Caruso, who played his partner. I don't know what happened

Caruso, I assure you. Well, now he's in that other cop show and is making

If I remember correctly (and there is certainly no guarantee of THAT ever
happening), Caruso got real popular real quick and thought he could parlay
that into multi-million dollar film-stardom. So he chameleonly (it is too a
word!) changed from Blue to Jade, then made maybe 2 more piddly little
movies and sat on his ass for years until the good folks at CSI gave him the
love tap to be on their show. That ugly mug was meant to be play a cop and
it is nice that he's finally realized it and got to policin'.

David Keith is a redheaded good ole boy from Tennessee whoose credits
include An Officer and a Gentleman, The Rose, Brubaker and Heartbreak
Hotel, in which he played Elvis. I met him at an Elvis tribute in LA a
few years ago and also ran into him backstage at Fan Fair in Nashville.

I think the poster has Caruso confused with David Keith
I have trouble remembering who is David Keith and who is Keith David. One's
the white guy from Officer and a Gentleman, the other's the black guy from
Platoon, They Live, and Dead Presidents.
============
"OHHHH what a BIG MAN you are! Heyyyy, lemme buy you a pack of gum I'll show
you how to chew it...OOOOF!"
Sings, too.
Not to mention The Further Adventures of Tennessee Buck!

He was good in "An Officer and a Gentleman" however...
Don't remember him. What character did he play?
Caruso played Topper... the guy who Lou Gossett choked half to death in the
martial arts demonstration.

How about that spin-off from Hill Street Blues that was about Dennis
Franz'
character moving to CaleeFornee-yah? What a turd that thing was! But

glad - cuz it wasn't too much longer after that he went on to become one
of
the top 3 greatest cop characters of all time with Andy Sipowicz on NYPD

I'll miss ya, Blue.
But I'll still have The Shield.

I remember the first few episodes, and it wasn't Sipowitz that was

It was David Caruso, who played his partner. I don't know what happened

Caruso, I assure you. Well, now he's in that other cop show and is making
amends.

It's sad to see someone with talent fuck it up.

Interesting news from Entertainment Weekly. I think she will end up killing
herself on the Sopranos. Either on purpose or by overdose
"After years of living with a wiseguy, Drea de Matteo is moving in with a
not-too-bright guy.
Oh right, like Christopher's likely to be seen at a MENSA meeting. It
doesn't take brains to be a scumbag.

The actress best known as Adriana on ''The Sopranos'' has
Post by Steve84
landed a costarring role in ''Joey,'' this fall's ''Friends'' spinoff starring
How utterly disappointing. She deserved to get whacked even before she
became a rat.
